African Penguin Volunteer Program in Gqeberha

Looking to volunteer in South Africa with wildlife? The African Penguin conservation project in Gqeberha offers a unique opportunity to support endangered penguins while gaining hands-on experience in marine conservation.

As a volunteer, you work alongside experienced staff at a leading rehabilitation centre. Your role contributes directly to the rescue, care, and release of African penguins, making a real impact on conservation efforts.

Unlike a general wildlife placement, this program focuses specifically on marine bird conservation. Therefore, you gain hands-on experience in seabird care while contributing to the protection of a critically threatened species.

Why Join the African Penguin Volunteer Program?

African Penguins are endangered due to oil spills, overfishing, and habitat destruction. As a result, conservation centres play a vital role in stabilising populations.

SANCCOB has rescued and rehabilitated thousands of seabirds over the years. Their work aligns with global conservation priorities supported by organisations such as BirdLife International and the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

By joining the African Penguin Volunteer Program, you contribute directly to:

• Marine bird rescue and rehabilitation
• Feeding and fish preparation
• Enclosure cleaning and hygiene
• Supporting medical and recovery procedures
• Visitor education and awareness initiatives

Importantly, this is practical and physically active work. Expect early mornings, fish preparation, cleaning duties, and supervised hands-on care. Although the work can be demanding, it is also deeply rewarding.

How Does the African Penguin Volunteer Program Work?

Volunteers typically work five days per week, including some weekends. Shifts run from 8:00 to 17:00 with breaks during the day.

You must be physically fit, reliable, and comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions. In addition, an up-to-date tetanus vaccination is required.

The birds are wild animals. Therefore, all interaction is structured and supervised to prioritise animal welfare.

If you like animals and wildlife, why not combine this project with our Big Five Safari Program in the same area and get a discount on both projects?

Life Beyond the Rescue Centre

While working days focus on marine conservation, your off days offer exploration opportunities. You can visit Addo Elephant National Park, explore the Garden Route, take surf lessons, or enjoy coastal hikes.

As a result, this placement combines meaningful conservation work with a vibrant beach lifestyle.

Accommodation and Support

Volunteers stay in a beautiful comfortable beachfront Volunteer House in Gqeberha. The house includes WiFi, a swimming pool, shared social areas, and walking access to the beach.

All meals are provided. In addition, coordinators arrange daily transport to SANCCOB and provide ongoing support throughout your stay.

Overall, the African Penguin Volunteer Program offers the ideal balance between structured marine conservation work and an unforgettable South African gap year experience.

Why Volunteer in Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha)?

Port Elizabeth offers a more personal and authentic experience than larger tourist cities like Cape Town. You live near the beach, connect closely with your project which serves the largest African Penguin colony in the world, and become part of a smaller international volunteer community. At the same time, you are close to Addo Elephant National Park and the Garden Route for weekend adventures.

Volunteer with African Penguins in South Africa

This penguin conservation project offers a rare opportunity to work closely with one of the world’s most endangered seabirds. The African penguin population has declined significantly, making conservation efforts more important than ever.

As a volunteer, you support daily operations such as feeding, cleaning, and assisting with rehabilitation. You also learn about marine ecosystems, conservation challenges, and the impact of human activity on wildlife. This project is ideal for volunteers who are passionate about animals, conservation, and making a real difference. No prior experience is required, just a willingness to get involved and contribute to hands-on work.

Is this Program ethical and responsible?

Yes. This African Penguin Volunteer Program supports established conservation organisations working to protect endangered African penguins. Volunteers assist trained staff and do not replace local jobs.

Will I work directly with African penguins?

Is this African Penguin Volunteer Program suitable for a gap year?

Yes. The program combines hands-on wildlife conservation experience with coastal living in South Africa, making it ideal for gap year participants interested in marine life.
